At the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the "Champ de Mars" represents one of the most emblematic sites of Paris. The history of this huge open garden dates back to 1751, the year of its creation. Originally a military site, where the Military School was constructed, it became a launch point for the Montgolfier brothers' first hot air balloon flight in 1783. Historian Jules Michelet affirmed that it was the only monument which had not been destroyed by the Revolution.
